Silk scarf: Franz Marc, The TigerFranz Marc
In 2016, we commemorate 100 year after Marc died in battle of WWi in Verdun, France. Born only in 1880, Franc Marc had died prematurely in the midst of his creative career. Together with Kandinsky, he had formed the 'Blue Rider' in the year 1911. For him 'all things are unspeakable, unspeakably beautiful' (Franz Marc 1915) and one wonders whether he was a reader of the medieval mystic Meister Eckhart. Today, people look at his work in a different way, see him in context with the literature he loved, the philosopher Nietzsche, the writers Flaubert and Tolstoi. Of course, his legacy is broad, and people around the world admire him - not alone the students at Harvard who can visit the 'Red Horses' (also available at artsinhistory.com as a silk scarf and necktie). Like Kandinsky, Marc looked for spiritual and sensual experience through colour and form. Kandinsky wrote not a manifesto, but foundational literature about these and together with Marc they put it into practice. Still today, as one can see from this ingenious silk scarf and necktie, one cannot take one's eye off this bright and colourful piece of art and clothing. The Details of our 'Tiger'
