Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890) produced this emblematic picture in 1889. With its dramatic colours and the dynamics of the wind and wave like clouds in the sky between the dark tower of the church and the glowing lights of the moon, it craves the mood which leads from impressionism to expressionism. The painting shows van Goghs look out of the window of his asylum place at Saint Remy de Provence, at dusk.
Since 1941, the painting is kept in the Museum of Modern Art, New York City. It is probably one of the most iconic paintings that he has painted and made his name.
