House of Hohenzollern
The “Hohenzollern” is more than just a family name, it was an entire dynasty. It not only forms one of the most powerful conglomerate of family networks in the north of Germany stretching from Prussia to Brandenburg further east into Romania, but as the family originated in the 11th century rather from the south-west of Germany, more precisely from Swabia with its town Hechingen where we find the famous Hohenzollern Castle, its network also contains those southern often Catholic areas as, for example, Sigmaringen and others. But also the south-east is represented with a branch of the family in Franconia. No wander, therefore, that this powerhouse provided electors, kings, princes and, finally the Hohenzollern became the hereditary emperors of the German Empire and Kings of Prussia. Only after WWI their empire crumbled, the emperor was removed and Germany developed into a democracy. Yet, although less known today, the family still exists and lives on.
