Prussian King Frederick the Great and the castle Sanssouci

Sanssouci was constructed as a summer private residence of Prussian King Frederick II (reign 1740-1786) in Potsdam, near Berlin.
Frederick II, named Frederick the Great, was known through the new organisation and modernisation of the Prussian army, developing of the military theory, modernizing of the Prussian bureaucracy, reform of the judicial system and other political efforts, but alsothrough the development of the arts and the Enlightenment in Prussia.
His youth interest was not for the military, but more for philosophy and music. Frederick supported arts and philosophers and promoted complete freedom of the press and literature.

Sanssouci is often counted as the German rivals of Versailles. This palace was designed and built by Georg Wenceslaus von Knobelsdorff around the mid of the 18th century in the more intimate Rococo style, is much smaller than French Baroque palace and has also numerous temples and follies in the park.
The name of the castle has a great importance: it come from a French "sans souci", what means "without concerns" and can be translated as "no worries" or "carefree", whereby is symbolizing, that the palace was not a symbol of power, but a place for relaxation.
