Frederick the Great
Frederick II was more widely known as Frederick the Great. He was born on January 24, 1712 in Berlin, Prussia. He was the son of King Frederick Wilhelm I and his wife Sophia Dorothea of Hanover. In his youth, Frederick II displayed fondness and talent for music, arts and languages resulting in his strict father prescribing military training. When he came of age, Frederick II endeavored to seek freedom and escape to England to stay with his grandfather George I. He and his friend were caught and court-martialed by King Frederick Wilhelm I and he was forced to watch as his friend was decapitated as punishment. Frederick II became Prussia's king in 1740 and ruled until 1786. Ruling with great strength, wit and with brilliant military strategies, Frederick II reacquired scattered Prussian territory something his father before him was unable to do. He was also greatly loved by his people that they nicknamed him "Old Fritz" (Der Alte Fritz). He earned the Prussian people's veneration through modernizing Prussia, he was tolerant of other religions, a patron of music and arts, and valued architecture - he ordered the construction of the Berlin State Opera, State Library Berlin, St. Hedwig's Cathedral, and Prince Henry's Palace (now Humboldt University).
