Prussian Kings and Peacocks
Peacocks were a favourite bird of the Prussian Kings. When in 1793 Friedrich Wilhelm II received an island in the river Havel, he gave it the name of Peacock Island. For him it was to create a habitat for the preservation of nature and an artificial world. When today you walk around the island, you will notice that Peacocks are walking around, too, not constrained to a cage, but enjoying their freedom. Overlooking the articificially created landscapes, one is reminded of the romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. Yet, a little later, the island became so fashionable with visitors, that to preserve the animals of the island, around the mid of the 19th century, king Friedrich Wilhelm IV brought the peacocks to the city, where together with other animals, the made the start of what later became the famous Berlin Zoo close to the Gedaechtniskirche.
