Ceramic Mug, 'Royal Flowers', white
These 'Royal Flowers' are very particular ones. The design was produced as a painting by Gottfried Wilhelm Völcker (Prussian, 1775-1849) in the year 1847 for the royal apartment in the Charlottenburg Palace, today's residence of Germany's Bundespräsident.
Gottfried Wilhelm Völcker is a real Berliner. He received his training as a porcelain painter at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin by his famous teacher Johann Friedrich Schulze in the early 19th century. He specialised in flower painting, but was later promoted to becoming the director of the whole porcelain factory (1833-1848). His art works focus on porcelain paintings but he also painted naturalistic pictures of flowers and fruit still lifes in oil and watercolor. Already in 1811, Völcker became a professor and was awarded membership of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and joined the Berlin Artists Association (1814-1846). His works show influence of his tours to Vienna in 1821, Paris in 1823 and the Netherlands in 1825. He exhibited regularly with the Berlin Academy, but his biggest success were his porcelain creations.
