CHUPÍCUARO FERTILITY FIGURINE ReplicaThis fertility figurine derives from the prehispanic culture Chupícuaro in Central-America, located close to the border, west of the Mexican Plateau. Close by is the Lerma River; unfortunately the greatest part of the archaeological site is under water by the Solis dam. Nevertheless, is was an important place with more than a dozen pyramids built on an oval basement, only one has been partially explored. But numerous findings have been found, such as various flint stone objects, figurines and pottery. Amongst the most important finds of this culture is this marvellous figurine that is now kept at the Louvres in Paris.
The figurine is characteristically decorated with a three-coloured geometric pattern. It is typical for
Chupícuaro's ceramic workshops, which are recognized as one of the finest inMesoamerica by their finishing and decoration. Outstanding is their geographical symbolism with multiple shapes and colours. As in many other ancient cultures, we find predominantly female deities, and features linked to them like maternity, breastfeeding and ornaments. As with our figurine, we discover three-colour polychrome figurines, but there also a few monochromatic ones.
Height of our figurine: 15cm.
