Frederick the Great
Frederick II was more widely known as Frederick the Great. He was Prussia's king from 1740 - 1786, ruling with great strength, wit and with brilliant military strategies, Frederick II reacquired scattered Prussian territory something his father before him was unable to do. He was also greatly loved by his people that they nicknamed him "Old Fritz" (Der Alte Fritz). He earned the Prussian people's veneration through modernizing Prussia, he was tolerant of other religions, a patron of music and arts, and valued architecture - he ordered the construction of the Berlin State Opera, State Library Berlin, St. Hedwig's Cathedral, and Prince Henry's Palace (now Humboldt University).
