Magnet Glorious Peacock
Gracing this fridge magnet is none other than the King of Birds, the mesmerizing Peacock. With its brilliant feathers and magnificence surrounded by huge peonies in bloom along with other beautiful birds, this magnet is truly a souvenir worth treasuring. The inspiration for the design of this refrigerator magnet is a section of the wallpaper art that adorns the royal bedchambers of Prince Henry of Prussia within the walls of the New Palace. The New Palace (or Neues Palais in German) was completed in 1769 under the commission of Prussian King Frederick II who was also known as Frederick the Great. The palace is one of many palaces that array the manicured gardens of Sanssouci Park, Potsdam – the legacy of the ruling House of Hohenzollern during the Prussian era.
Peacock: King of Birds
Immensely popular among Prussian monarchs, peafowls have been given special attention during the Prussian era. In 1793 King Frederick William II acquired the Peacock Island. Since his reign until today the island has remained a nature reserve for the many peafowls, local and exotic birds, and a variety of plants and flowers. The opulent design theme of the 'Glorious Peacock', is also a popular royal home decor that is inspired by the historic wallpapers in the New Palace at Potsdam. Frederick the Great, who built his summer residence in Sanssouci Park, utilized this decor from the 18th century to give exoticism, vitality and elegance to his home.
