Magnet Tall Guy

This fridge magnet bears the image of a “Long Guy.” He is a representation of King Frederick William I's regiment of soldiers who were collectively known as the Giant Guards of Potsdam (Potsdamer Riesengarde in German).

These soldiers were handpicked mostly due to their height – averaging between 6 and 7 feet. Despite their official title, the citizens of Prussia came to call them simply as “Long Blokes” or “Long Guys” (Langer Kerls in German). King Frederick William I ruled from 1688 – 1740 and his fascination with height was so great that he created this regiment mostly for show and the troops almost never saw armed combat.

He even resorted to kidnapping and trying to pair tall men and women to bear tall offspring to add to the regiment. For this reason, it is unclear whether the “Long Guys” had any added military value. Furthermore, the King was all too fond of his handpicked armed unit that even when there was any armed fighting he never risked these tall soldiers to be in battle. Instead, the King paraded the soldiers for his own entertainment and to impress both local and foreign dignitaries.

When the King died in 1740 the regiment had strength of more than 3,000 men. However, King Frederick the Great (Old Fritz), his successor did not share his father's sentiments about the regiment, which seemed to him an unnecessary expense. The regiment was largely disbanded and most of its soldiers were integrated into other units.
