This beautiful match box combines sentimentality and utility. Keep this as a souvenir of the rich, wonderful history of the Prussian era and knowing your money will be put to good use with this handy matchbox. Both sides of the box are adorned. One side is graced by an image of the King of Birds. With its brilliant feathers and magnificence surrounded by huge peonies in bloom along with other beautiful birds, the peacock is a beautiful, impressive creature. The inspiration for the design of this refrigerator magnet is a section of the wallpaper art that adorns the royal bedchambers of Prince Henry of Prussia within the walls of the New Palace. The New Palace (or Neues Palais in German) was completed in 1769 under the commission of Prussian King Frederick II who was also known as Frederick the Great. The palace is one of many palaces that array the manicured gardens of Sanssouci Park, Potsdam – the legacy of the ruling House of Hohenzollern during the Prussian era.
The opposite side of the match is embellished with a section of Gottfried Wilhem Völcker's entitled "Still Life with an arrangement of various flowers." He created this masterpiece in 1847 for Elisabeth Ludovika Queen Consort of Prussia, the wife of King Frederick William IV. At present this sensational painting hangs within the apartment halls of the former Queen Consort in Charlottenburg Palace, which is the largest and most important castle complex of the former Brandenburg electors, Prussian kings and German emperors in Berlin.
