Besides the new organisation and modernisation of the Prussian army and his involment in of the seven yearth' war, his efforts was well known particularly through the development of the arts and the Enlightenment in Prussia. His youth interest was not for the military, but more for philosophy and music. This fervour persisted whole his life long: notwithstanding he was an influential military theorist, whose analysis covered issues of tactic and strategy, mobility and logistics, Frederick supported arts and philosophers and promoted complete freedom of the press and literature.
Frederick modernized the Prussian bureaucracy, reformed the judicial system and made it possible for not nobles to become judges and high functionary. Frederick also excited the people of other nationalities and faiths to come to Prussia, while he had also the prejudice against jews and resorted to the oppressive measures against conquered Poland during the First Partition.
Frederick is buried at his favorite summer residence Sanssouci in Potsdam (cf. also our mug "Sanssouci" and espresso cup "Sanssouci"), that was the place, where he relaxed from his governemental duties and consacrated his time to the arts and philosophy.
