For the Prussian Kings peacocks were definitely the favoured and celebrated birds. King Friedrich Wilhelm II gave the name of "Peacock Island" to an island in the river Havel that he received in 1793. Also today Peacocks are walking around this island surrounded by different types of flora and fauna, enjoying their freedom, not constrained in any sort of cage. The famous and preferred summer residence of King Frederick the Great of Prussia, the Sanssouci Palace is often compared as the German version of Versailles despite the Sanssouci Palace being more of a Rococo style and is far smaller than French Palace. The Palace stands within the landscaped gardens in Sanssouci Park in Potsdam surrounded by numerous temples and follies in the park.
