The Polar Bear

also known as "Ours blanc", or "the White Bear" was the key sculpture that made Pompon suddenly famous in 1922. It was a late acknowledgement in his life, as he was already 67 years old. His first major work was a statue of Cosette (from Victor Hugo's Les Misérables) for the Salon in 1879.

The artist Francois Pompon

Pompon (9 May 1855 – 6 May 1933) was born in Saulieu in French Burgundy into the family of a carpenter. At 15, he started to work at a funeral home in Dijon, where he learned the basic principles of sculpture. In the evenings, he took classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Five years later he went to Paris, where he continued to work during the day in Montparnasse at nemen undertaker and evening at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs. During his training, he met the sculptor Pierre-Louis Rouillard know. Riouillard created animal Figeren. This Verbinding could be considered a source of inspiration for the work, later became famous for Pompon. Only in 1919 sparked his work more interest. He sold the turtle stone ans Musee de Luxembourg and two years later three animal figures made of plaster to the Musée de Grenoble. Only at the age of 67 years came with the exhibition l'Ours Blanc in plaster at the Salon des Artistes Français of Large breakthrough. Successful exhibitions in Tokyo and Osaka followed, and the world-famous polar bear there inzwichen in marble. The nearly 300 works that are Pompon leaves the French State at his death exhibited at the Musée des Beaux Arts in Dijon. The Musée d'Orsay in Paris has a large open plaster cast collection.
