What is Rococo?
Probably better known as Late Baroque, the name derives from the combination of the French terms, rocaille = stone and coquilles = shell. People who visit Bavarian Baroque churches with hundreds of golden angels may think that this is peak of embellishments, and yet, in the late Baroque times, artists tried to maximise this ornamentation even more, especially in a leisurely and playful way. This 18th-century artistic movement and style impacted on painting, sculpture and architecture, but it also influenced the early industrial designs, interior designs, decorations, music, literature and theatre, and also every day utensils, such as this wonderful umbrella. While France was a centre, the Prussian kings loved and imitated much of Frances avant-gardist innovations.
