Roman Wax tablet booklet Replica - polyptychon
Wax tablet booklet - polyptychon
A whole book written with a stylus: That's the ultimate of wax tablets! Anyone who wants to trace ancient history in scripture should use the stylus (lat. stilus) and this unusual wax tablet (lat. tabula). That is a wax tablet booklet of the kind that was used in Roman antiquity.
The writing tablet consists of massive beechwood. Thehand-made tablets are only five millimetres thick and filled on both sides with real beeswax. After many tries we succeeded in chiselling out the thin wooden tablets on both sides and in filling them neatly with wax, the way the ancient model had been made. This booklet has therefore as many as eight writeable pages of wax!
Wax tablet booklets were widespread, although there are only few well-preserved findings. Thanks to the possibility to erase the wax again, the wax tablets are permanently applicable and therefore, because of the complex production, they are an unusual note-'book' for everyday use.
