On 1st September 1939 Hitler's German army invaded Poland with Britain and France then declaring war on Germany 2 days later. World War II had begun. By June 1940 the Germans had overpowered France and the low countries including Belgium and the Netherlands. With the fall of France, Hitler hoped Britain might settle for peace. Under its new leader, Winston Churchill, Britain had no intention of doing so. Hitler decided to launch a huge seaborne invasion across the English Channel, but first the German air force had to defeat the British Royal Air Force.
The Battle of Britain began on 10th July 1940, and battle raged day-after-day until the RAF gradually won control and in October 1940 Germany stopped the operation.
On 6th June 1944 (D-Day) the allied armies embarked from England on the largest amphibious landing in history onto the beaches of Normandy. At the same time the Russians were attacking the Germans from the East. This was the beginning of the end for Hitler's armies who surrendered on 7th May 1945.
