Brandenburg Gate

Built in the 1730s as one of the 18 gates of Berlin's Customs Walls, the Brandenburg Gate was renovated during the reign of Frederick William II to represent peace but underwent further changes when Napoleon defeated the Prussian kingdom in 1806 and after some parts of it were destroyed during WWII. For almost 30 years (1961-1989) the Brandenburg Gate was the symbol of division not only between the two German states but also between the Democratic West and the Communist East. Former U.S. President John F. Kennedy famously said these words in West Berlin,
"Two thousand years ago the proudest boast was 'Civis Romanus Sum' (I am a Roman citizen). Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is 'Ich bin ein Berliner!' All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words "Ich bin ein Berliner!" Until today these words are engraved within the minds of people from around the world.
